It was first discovered in the year 1828 by F. Von Kobell and was named Okenite after German naturalist Lorenz Oken. Okenite is commonly known to be a silicate mineral that is also known to be associated with zeolites. Other zeolites that are commonly associated with Okenites are Apophyllite, Goose Creekite, Gyrolite, Chalcedony, Prehnite, etc. Okenite is often found in the shape of small white cotton balls located within basalt geodes. the cotton ball formations are composed of straight, radiating, and fibrous crystals that are found to be bendable as well fragile. These minerals can be found to be soft to the touch but holding them with the human hand has to be done carefully in order to keep all its needle like point intact.

Okenite can be found in various areas located around the world. It can be found in Chile, Bulla Island, India, New Zealand, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands, and Bordo Islands. In fact, the majority of the world's Okenite is mined and produced from Maharashtra, India. Not only can be Okenite be found in various locations around the world but in can also come in various colors and shades. It can come in white, a light blue tint, and even yellow.
