Many items on Gem Avenue feature sterling silver accents (clasps, chains,
closures, etc). Sterling silver is an alloy containing at least 92.5% silver and
7.5% another metal (usually copper). Silver is one of the softer metals so in
order to stabilize it especially for jewelry another metal is mixed in with it
creating this alloy that is more durable. Sterling silver was first used in
Europe and was found in trade in the 1100ís and became a popular material in the
making of flatware (spoons, forks, knives) in the 1800ís.
