About Our Gemstone Rings

A gemstone is a piece of mineral, crystalline rock, or other organic material that is cut and polished, typically used for making jewelry.  They vary in brilliance, color, clarity, hardness, and durability and display varying degrees of rarity, beauty, and desirability.

Gemstones are typically categorized as either precious, or semi precious. Precious gemstones include the likes of the well known, such as diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires while all others fall into the semi precious category. Don’t be misled, strongly colored semi precious stones of good size can be worth more than a diamond!  They are further classified by Mohs scale of mineral hardness-it basically measures a mineral’s hardness (or scratch resistance) on a scale of 1 to 10, talc being 1 and diamond being the hardest (most scratch resistant) at 10.

In addition to being prized for their beauty, gemstones have traditionally been known to have special powers and medicinal properties.  So instead of popping an ibuprofen, someone in the past (and even today!) will simply don jewelry featuring jasper around the neck.  Have a big exam?  Wear your favorite adventurine piece for the day-its thought to increase intelligence!  Whether or not the claims can be substantiated, it’s nice to know that there is a possibility that there are other benefits to wearing awesome and fashionable natural gemstone jewelry!
